Maybe they have thin, soft hair that’s hard to comb and it makes them uncomfortable, so they’ll feel better wearing a hat to cover it. (I have nice hair that would look MUCH better cropped short, but I’ve never worn a winter hat.) This is useless. For many years, removing hats was a common way for men to show respect to women in Western countries. It is simply a social convention with deep roots in history. One can find dozens of explanations, all reasonably correct, throughout history. But like most long-standing social conventions, I would venture to guess that it has its deepest military roots. Imagine you’re a guest in someone’s castle but you’re still wearing your helmet/armor…at most, you’re insulting your hosts by suggesting you don’t feel safe in their home. At worst, you have very nefarious intentions and wish to fight there. Red wedding style.
