Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl top a group of solid, if not spectacular, forwards capable of making for a strong playoff. Patrick Maroon had a stellar 2017 and will be looking to repeat that success with McDavid next season. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has had a disappointing offensive year but has become a solid two-way center and it would help if fans lowered their expectations of him. Milan Lucic has been disappointing at times but has had some brilliant form throughout the Steel City Kill Me Please Shirt and I love this season and will look to bounce back next year. The six players behind like Zack Kassian and Mark Letestu were great additions and really made an impact in the knockout stages. Several young players like Jesse Puljujarvi, Drake Caggiula and rookie Ryan Strome will be looking to take the next step this season.
The Oilers’ defense looks pretty solid, but question marks remain. Adam Larsson and Oscar Klefbom are two of the Steel City Kill Me Please Shirt and I love this most reliable defenders night after night. Formerly a defensive stone, often delivering powerful blows to intimidate enemy attackers; the latter is a power-playing midfielder, scoring timely goals throughout the regular season and knockouts. In addition, the rest of the defenses raised a few red flags. Andrej Sekera is a good veteran but will miss the first few weeks of the new season. Matt Benning is a formidable third defensive pair, but this is only his second year in the NHL, and it remains to be seen whether he will continue to be effective. Nurse Darnell was present in person and was involved in several violations, but poor punishment and poor judgment hampered his effectiveness. Kris Russell is a save machine that offers minimal attack and ball control. Others like Eric Gryba and Yohann Auvitu are best part-time and won’t really be a factor. Oilers will look to prospects like Ethan Bear to fill the gap on the green line in the near future.
