He was a once-in-a-lifetime player and I consider myself incredibly lucky that he played while I was alive and that I got to watch him. I just don’t see anyone topping him, certainly not crazy Sidney Crosby. Sid scored just over a thousand points in 12 seasons – certainly an admirable number. But he still needs to score more than 1,800 points over the next eight seasons — assuming he stays healthy and plays that long — to match Gretzky’s numbers. It doesn’t happen. Let us all welcome the Great Emperor!

Career-wise, there aren’t any great opportunities either. Let’s say AO maintains his career-best scoring pace this season (at the time of writing, he has 29 goals in 32 games) and scores 74 goals this year. That would put him at 681 for his career. He’s 33 years old, assuming he has 7 good years left, which is pretty unlikely. He still needs to average over 30 per year to achieve this. Technically it’s possible, but I wouldn’t bet money on it.
